Candle Care

How do I burn candles safely?

Candles are meant to be enjoyed, but it is important that you follow some common-sense safety rules when burning them. These rules will help you achieve the best burn possible with your candles, too!

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles when you leave a room or before going to sleep. We recommend burning for a maximum of 4 hours each time you enjoy your candle.
  • Follow the 2-foot rule. Don't place a burning candle within 2 feet of clothing, books, curtains, or other flammable objects.
  • Keep lit candles away from drafts, ceiling fans, and any air currents. This keeps the flame burning steadily in the center of the candle.
  • Trim the wick to ¼” before every burn. This helps prevent the flame from getting too large, and also cuts down on any excess soot or black smoke.
  • Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Place pillar candles in candle holders on a stable, heat-resistant surface that is sturdy and large enough to catch any melted wax.
  • Always read and follow the manufacturers' directions for use and safety, and extinguish a candle if the flame gets too close to the candle holder or container.
  • When burning multiple candles at once, always place them at least 3 inches apart from each other.
  • A burning candle should never be used as a nightlight. Always extinguish any lit candles before going to sleep.
  • A candle should not be burned for more than four hours at a time, exceeding this could cause safety issues.
